Donald Trump suspended his plans to impose steep tariffs on Mexico and Canada on Monday. In return for talks on border and crime enforcement with the neighboring countries, he agreed to a 30-day pause. However, tariffs on China are still to take effect on Tuesday.
The leaders of both neighboring countries, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said they talked with Trump and agreed to bolster border enforcement to respond to President Trump’s demand to crack down on illegal immigration and drug smuggling. As a result, Trump will pause the tariffs for the next 30 days. To do this, Canada has agreed to deploy new technology and personnel along its border in an attempt to fight organized crime, fentanyl smuggling, and money laundering. At the same time, the Mexican President has agreed to reinforce their Northern border with 10,000 National Guards to deal with illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Speaking about the deal between the neighboring coin tribes, Trump said, “As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of all Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome.”

However, no such deal has been made with China, meaning that the 10% tariff on China will occur at 12:01 a.m. ET, Tuesday. A speaker from the administration said that President Trump doesn’t expect to have a conversation with China’s Xi Jinping until later this week. Trump said, “China hopefully is going to stop sending us fentanyl, and if they’re not, the tariffs are going to go substantially higher.”
On the other hand, China has called Fentanyl America’s problem and said that it will dispute the tariffs on the international stage in the World Trade Organisation if necessary. However, it also left the door open for bilateral talks between the nations to navigate the problem more diplomatically and economically.
