US Federal agencies have been directed to prepare for massive job cut plans as part of President Trump’s attempt to get the federal agencies under state control. The DOGE ( Department of Government Efficiency) and other top administration officials issued a memo on Wednesday informing the federal agencies about job cuts.
The document, signed by the office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought, outlines a two-phase process for implementing large-scale job cuts, as promised by President Trump before his second tenure. Budget Director Russell Vought said in the memo, “The federal government is costly, inefficient, and deeply in debt. Tax dollars are being siphoned off to fund unproductive and unnecessary programs that benefit radical interest groups while hurting hardworking American citizens.”. The memo directed agencies to “collaborate with their Department of Government Efficiency (or DOGE) team leads within the agency.” It is worth noting that previously, the DOGE gave employees an offer to leave their respective positions with 8 months of pay or risk getting fired in the future. The offer has now elapsed, though.
The White House has revealed that more than 65,000 federal employees accepted the buyout offer from the Office of Personnel Management. A memo from Vought, who perceives federal employees as supporting Democratic interests, has sparked wider workforce cuts impacting over two million workers. Federal agencies are required to provide initial reduction plans by March 13 and complete restructuring proposals by April 14, in accordance with Trump’s executive order from February 11 aimed at reforming the federal bureaucracy.

Agencies are directed to combine overlapping departments, simplify management structures, streamline regional offices, and lessen dependence on contractors. A suggested approach includes assessing non-essential roles usually impacted by government shutdowns. Exceptions are made for law enforcement, national security personnel, military staff, postal workers, political appointees, and White House employees.
